Julie H. Poncar, a longtime employee of The David M. Gilston Insurance Agency, moved in January 2012 from the company’s Charleston office to Greenville, SC to work with agents and employers in the Upstate region. The Gilston Agency is a Charleston-based company that supports insurance brokers and agents across South Carolina.  Poncar provides employee benefit solutions and educates agents, employers and individuals on the Affordable Care Act.    

Poncar brings 35 years of experience in the health insurance industry. While working for the Gilston Agency, Poncar previously assisted brokers and their group clients in Charleston to help them find the best employee benefits to meet their needs. Prior to working with the Gilston Agency, she held positions with BlueCross BlueShield of SC, United HealthCare and Carolina Care Plan.

In the Fall of 2017, Poncar left the employment of the Gilston Agency and started J.P. Benefits, LLC in order to expand her team and provide more service to her clients.  She maintains a close tie with the Gilston Agency acting as her General Agency for most of the insurance products she markets. 

A graduate of the College of Charleston, she holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration and achieved the Registered Health Underwriter (RHU) and Register Employee Benefits Consultant (REBC) designations from the American College. Poncar has been active over the years in the Lowcountry Association of Health Underwriters (LAHU), and the South Carolina Association of Health Underwriters (SCAHU).  She is a past president of LAHU and past treasurer of SCAHU. She is active in the community with membership in the Simpsonville SC Chamber of Commerce and in the Money Makers Chapter of Business Networking International. 

She has been married for 34 years and in her spare time she enjoys traveling and scuba diving with her husband.  They are active members of their local church, Fellowship Greenville.  Julie is also a Board Member for SWITCH, an organization with the mission of ending human trafficking and sexual exploitation in the Upstate of SC.
